The Sunken Ship

Work 83 of 440

Page 95. 'The Sunken Ship': a haunting extended metaphor. Reading about a shipwreck, he forgets — but flashes of the sunken ship intrude. At midnight his house rocks like a sinking ship. He screams: how can a house become a sinking ship? But who hears one dying on a sinking ship? He doesn't believe he's the one dying. Then signals from the sea-bottom: the earth is a sea, his house a sunken ship. The ship becomes his psyche, the house his existence, all sinking. 'Ballad': beginning of a grotesque WWI poem. Darkness splits, a grave opens. A limbless body rises, scraping through trenches and forests, rocking upward. Dismembered soldier seeking rest.

English Translation

The Sunken Ship

I see a description in the newspaper, a picture:

the sunken ship —

I lay the newspaper aside, forget

the sunken ship.

In the tumult of day a flash strikes my head now and then

the sunken ship, —

I hear signals — from the abyss sends to me

the sunken ship.

At midnight, when I sleep, my house begins to rock

like a sinking ship,

I scream through sleep: how can a house on earth become

like a sinking ship? —

But who will hear the cries of one who dies

on a sinking ship?

When I myself don't believe that I am the one who dies

on a sinking ship.

And suddenly I hear signals from the sea-bottom, calls me

the sunken ship:

I stop screaming, I know now: the earth is a sea and my house —

a sunken ship.

Ballad

The darkness splits apart,

a grave opens up:

there rises from the grave

a single limbless body.

Through deep-dug trenches

the body begins to turn, to scrape:

through forests from one tree to another

it rocks itself around and up.
