Page 94. Continuation of 'Past a Deep Pit': chased by snake-like hands, the faster he runs the closer they come. They catch and drag him into the pit — then suddenly: no hands, no snakes, just an ordinary street and house. Dream logic. 'Wondrous': a surreal domestic scene. His house is full of unknown people in magical light, no one knows anyone's name, all faces shy. They drink radiant wine. Neither guests nor his wife notice him, the master of the house. He feels good being a stranger in his own home. When all take the beds, he lies on the ground, on the hard threshold, peacefully awaiting a 'wondrous' morning. Alienation as liberation.

I am frightened and leap back,
the hands after me, like two white snakes:
I run from them, and the faster I run,
the closer I come to them.
A moment — and they have caught me,
grabbed me, dragged me into the pit.
And suddenly I see: no hands, no snakes —
a street, a house, a porch of a house.
Wondrous
My house is full of unknown people
and dipped in magical light,
and no one knows the other's name
and shy is everyone's face.
They all sit down at the table and sit
and take to the radiant wine,
and me, the master of the house, no one notices,
how quietly and strangely I've come in.
Then my wife comes, doesn't notice me either,
like all the guests she too is far from me.
And somehow it feels good to be a stranger,
to watch from the side in my own house.
And bit by bit the wine gets drunk up —
they all lie down and fall asleep,
take all the beds, benches and chairs,
and I — just to stay awake till day.
I lie down on the ground and think to myself:
— how wondrous the morning will yet be.
And on the hard threshold my head thrown back
a waiting one, peacefully I fall asleep.
