'Shney — di neshome fun der velt' (snow — the soul of the world) on their peaks. Winds with 'tseshturemte, tsedreydte fekher' (stormy, twisted fans) dance on 'ovnt-step' (evening steppe). Poet in snow and storm though bedridden — 'vi a geshmidter' (like one chained). Still 'hungerik nokh libshaft un yisurim' (hungry for love and suffering — Hebrew 'yissurim'). 'Nokh — nokh — nokh — azoy iz mayn gebet' (more — more — more — so is my prayer — Hebrew 'gebet'=prayer). Body storms with storm: head bows, feet efface steps. Fingers 'furemen a furem' (furrow a furrow). Everything merges: 'step un barg, mentsh un shturem' (steppe and mountain, person and storm). Final unity: 'alts iz vays — vays — vays — vays' (all is white) — dissolution into snow/purity.

Higher, Rockies, the white heads — higher!
snow — the soul of the world — rests on your heads;
winds with stormy, twisted fans
dance at your feet on the evening steppe.
I too am in snow, and also in storm,
though I lie like one chained to a bed:
I am still hungry for love and for suffering: —
more — more — more — — — so is my prayer.
Strange and also wondrous to watch,
how a body storms along with the storm:
here — the head, it keeps bowing.
here — the feet efface their own steps.
And the fingers, as if they would furrow a furrow,
make whole every tear and over-tear;
all becomes one: steppe and mountain, person and storm,
all is white — white — white — white.
