Good That No One Knows Where
Work 368 of 440
Pages 432-433. Poem 'Gut vos keyner veys nit vu' (Good That No One Knows Where): refrain about unknowable location. Has written about death, chosen death, as if ready for 'letster ru' (final rest). Scale with 'sholn' (pans) shimmers somewhere. Calls from 'keler' (cellar) — 'vu bistu?' (where are you?). Body 'vi fun shtol geknotn' (as if kneaded from steel) in 'bloyen ovnt-shotn' (blue evening shadow). Paths with 'aker-shpurn' (plow-tracks), 'royte... shlengl-shnurn' (red serpent-threads — blood?). Echoes call 'du — du' (you — you). Night swallows echoes, rings 'glek' (bells). Silence brings 'dukhtunish-geshtalt' (phantom-figure) — then 'bsure' (message — Hebrew 'besorah'): 'dos bistu' (that is you). Throws body on paths. New poem 'Mitn ponim tsu dir' (With Face Toward You): addresses 'Har fun katastrofe' (Lord of catastrophe — Hebrew 'Har'=Lord). Lies on 'zofe' (sofa), 'vi Yitskhok oyfn mizbeakh mitn haldz tsum khalef gevendt' (like Isaac on altar with neck toward knife — Hebrew 'mizbeach', 'chalef'=slaughter knife). Akeida (Binding of Isaac) imagery — submission to divine catastrophe. Continuation of 'Mitn ponim tsu dir': lamps sway 'oyf elektrishe drotn' (on electric wires). Behind everything 'loyert a bahaltener shpion — a shotn' (lurks a hidden spy — shadow). Spies wait for 'ershtn rir' (first stir). Gives self 'mit gutn' (with good), counts 'letste minutn' (last minutes). Smiles like 'nar' (fool). More truth in 'tsugemakhte bremen' (closed eyelids) and 'krumen shmeykhl' (crooked smile). New poem 'Ki tov' (For It Is Good — Hebrew 'ki tov' from Genesis): painter at 'layvnt' (canvas) paints 'tliye' (gallows — Hebrew 'tli'a'), adds 'dinem guf' (thin body), then 'fayer-foygl' (fire-bird) flying to 'durkhzikhtike valkns' (transparent clouds). Focuses on 'vayte mrumim' (distant heights — Hebrew 'meromim'), 'fayerdike shpitsn' (fiery tips) of wings. Body hangs cold, 'gelitn' (suffered). 'Gegarte linyes' (yearned-for lines) come with 'emesn blut' (true blood). Painter 'fargliver' (frozen), says 'es iz gut' (it is good — echoing Genesis). Crucifixion/martyrdom imagery with artist as divine creator.

Good That No One Knows Where
Not once about death to you written,
not once chosen for myself death,
as if everything were ready for the final rest:
now one needn't repeat the words,
there stands somewhere shimmering such a scale with pans —
and good that no one knows where.
I call to you as if from a cellar:
where are you? — you and everyone, faster, faster:
steps echo, but no one comes:
a stiff body, as if kneaded from steel
lies covered in blue evening shadow —
and good that no one knows where.
On all paths — steps, like plow-tracks,
and red, still warm, serpent-threads.
And fresh echoes still ring: you — you:
the night comes to swallow the echoes.
the night begins to ring somewhere with bells —
and good that no one knows where.
And more than the voices, the silence brings
a phantom-figure that keeps approaching;
and suddenly, a message: — that is you:
away fear, away death, — I go to meet you,
I throw, I sow my body on all paths —
and good that no one knows where.
With Face Toward You
I stand again with face toward you, Lord of catastrophe,
you approach me and lay your hands upon me:
you tell me to go home, — I go — I lie down on the sofa,
like Isaac on the altar with neck turned toward the knife.
Four dim little lamps sway on electric wires.
Now I look at them, I count them: one, two, three, four.
behind every thing lurks a hidden spy — a shadow,
and all the spies wait — wait for my first stir.
What's the use of their lurking? — that I give myself up with good,
that I say: I've had enough on this earth. enough — my lord.
you see — here I count out for you myself my last minutes.
and smile besides with such a smile of a fool.
For whom is my smile unwelcome — and for whom
is it pure hope and announcement. — for the one who loves.
there is still more truth in closed eyelids.
and in the crooked smile of a drooping lip.
For It Is Good
A painter stood by a canvas and painted a gallows,
and then to the gallows added a thin body,
and above, over the body, a fire-bird, in flight
toward transparent clouds with beak up-up.
With the body the painter occupied himself little-little.
a foot, a hand — a stroke, and finished with them:
all his strength he gave to the distant heights:
and to the fiery tips of the two wings.
And to the beak. — color after color mixed — exchanged.
the body hung in shadow cold and sharp,
and together with the painter waited, and separately suffered,
that the yearned-for lines don't come as fast as needed.
In the end the yearned-for came in the right colors,
from the tips of wings dripped with true blood.
the painter stood frozen as before his own death,
and looked, and looked at the picture and said: it is good.
