Our fate we accept —
Work 300 of 440
Page 357. 'Undzer goyrl' (Our Fate) continuation: fate is 'zis un biter' (sweet and bitter); accepting it makes it also 'sheyn' (beautiful). The world is beautiful 'vi du' (like you). One voice urges closeness, another distance. 'A lip oyf a lip tut a tsiter / un a lip tut a lip a bis' (a lip on a lip trembles / and a lip gives a lip a bite) — love's sweet violence. Then a spring vision: 'yontev fun erd' (holiday of earth — Hebrew 'yontev'), 'mentsh iz oykh erd' (human is also earth). After winter's sleep, 'akerz akern' (plowmen plow), 'finger zeyen' (fingers sow). The imperative: 'lomir oyfakern eyner dem tsveytn' (let us plow one another) — human intimacy as agricultural metaphor. To 'oyfgeyn in layb in farzaytn' (rise in the body of the sown) — resurrection through union.
Undzer goyrl nemen mir on —
er iz zis un biter.
Un az mir nemen im on
vert er oykh sheyn.
Sheyn iz der goyrl,
un sheyn bistu,
un di velt arum
iz sheyn vi du.
Eyner in der velt mont:
zay noent, noent, noent:
a tsveyter in der velt shrayt:
zay vayt, vayt, vayt.
Un du bist klug,
un dayn shmeykhl geyt oyf,
un a lip oyf a lip tut a tsiter,
un a lip tut a lip a bis:
undzer goyrl nemen mir on —
undzer goyrl iz zis:
undzer goyrl nemen mir on —
undzer goyrl iz biter.
Aza tog vi haynt —
yontev fun erd:
un mentsh iz oykh erd —
yontev fun mentsh.
Di erd iz veykh
nokhn shlof fun vinter:
akerz akern,
un grobayznz grobn.
Un finger zeyen.
Aza tog vi haynt,
ven veln mir nokhamol hobn?
Mentsh iz oykh erd —
lomir oyfakern eyner dem tsveytn
un zeyen, farzeyen:
un oyfgeyn in layb in farzaytn.
Our fate we accept —
it is sweet and bitter.
And when we accept it
it becomes also beautiful.
Beautiful is the fate,
and beautiful are you,
and the world around
is beautiful like you.
One in the world urges:
be close, close, close:
another in the world cries:
be far, far, far.
And you are wise,
and your smile rises,
and a lip on a lip trembles,
and a lip gives a lip a bite:
our fate we accept —
our fate is sweet:
our fate we accept —
our fate is bitter.
Such a day as today —
holiday of earth:
and human is also earth —
holiday of human.
The earth is soft
after the sleep of winter:
plowmen plow,
and spades dig.
And fingers sow.
Such a day as today,
when will we have again?
Human is also earth —
let us plow one another
and sow, sow in:
and rise in the body of the sown.
