Work 439 of 440
Pages 525-526. 'Balade' (Ballad): prison poem. 'Nare' = plank-bed (Russian 'nary'). 'Arestant' = prisoner (Russian). 'Gratn' = grates/bars. The guard falls asleep against his 'bayonet fun biks' (bayonet of rifle). The prisoner reaches for the moon and it 'lozt zikh nemen' (lets itself be taken). 'Levone-vayn' = moon-wine - the prisoner drinks moonlight. His teeth lock 'tson tsu tson' and he sleeps forever in the dream. 'In oremen kheder' (In a poor room): a mother on 'finftn gorn' (fifth floor) lulls her 'blaykhn zun' (pale son). Her words are 'rayf-broyne vi zangen fun korn' (ripe-brown like grain stalks) - imagery of harvest and nourishment in poverty. Continuation of 'In oremen kheder' (In a poor room). The mother is 'hoykh' (tall), 'mat' (weary), with 'oysgeglit ponim' (smoothed-out face) - exhausted. Her hands are like those of a 'nome' (sleepwalker) wandering in 'blindn nit-hay' (blind not-being). After factory work 'untern rod fun mashinen' (under the wheel of machines), she climbs to the fifth floor. 'Orgl-derheybnkayt' = organ-exaltation. Her knees fall 'vi tsum eshafot' (as to the scaffold) but also rise 'vi tsum vidergeboyern' (as to rebirth) - both sacrifice and renewal. She rocks her sick child with words like 'zangen fun korn' (grain stalks) - nourishing imagery in the midst of poverty.

Ballad
On the plank-bed sleeps the prisoner,
the moon sleeps on the grates:
even the guard on the wall
lets himself also be betrayed by sleep.
From a whole day back-and-forth
his feet become like lead.
he falls to the bayonet of the rifle
with both fists, with the forehead.
Gives himself a grab the prisoner,
opens up his both eyebrows,
stretches out to the moon a hand,
and the moon -- it lets itself be taken.
From the grate to the straw-sack,
and to the chains, to the rings
and over the forehead, over the cheek,
and through the neck -- it lets itself be swallowed.
With moon-wine pour themselves full
the prisoner's all limbs;
until tooth locks against tooth
his mouth, and he falls asleep again.
When the morning bell rings
and all -- up, over thresholds, stairs,
it seems to him still, that he lies and drinks,
and he remains so forever lying.
In a poor room
In a poor room, on the fifth floor
she lulls to sleep her pale son
with words ripe-brown, like stalks of grain,
that sway under the July sun.
2
Tall is she. weary. with a smoothed-out face,
in constant struggle with herself,
with hands, like the hopeless hands of a sleepwalker,
that wander around in blind not-being.
The day has passed in need. in work
under the wheel of machines, in the shop:
the evening meets with doubt darker;
with bells and slippers' clatter.
With the climbing up to the fifth floor.
rises still more the bells' sound --
organ-exaltation, call of a horn,
hope and martyr-song.
The feet over threshold. (quiet, harps and bells!)
the little room aside, a step upon step.
to the dark corner, without trace of fright,
the knees fall down as to the scaffold.
The knees kneel up as to rebirth.
she sits down at the bed of her pale son.
and rocks him with words. like stalks of grain.
that brown themselves under the July sun.
