Hard neck -- and nothing more
Come. we will hide ourselves
in pits of earth, in stone crevices, --
we will stretch ourselves out with our body
with face down and neck up.
And we will not speak and not tell
why we wall ourselves in caves,
and we will not record the year,
and not the era and not the generation.
And we will not leave behind of ourselves any sign.
not a piece of clothing and not a strap.
not a lace-ribbon from a shoe,
and not a page from a book.
And let no one be able to find us
not at night and not at dawn
and if someone does find us --
let him find a hard neck, nothing more.
Let him gape and not understand
why we had to flee into the cave,
and what was our last word
in the depth of the stony place.
And let him look and find out nothing
whether something was done to our conscience.
whether someone refined our courage.
whether someone made impure our blood.
Whether a sand-storm tortured us,
or perhaps a sand-righteous one:
through axe, through hanging-rope, through bullet,
or perhaps through word from mouth.
And when he will ask the remains of limbs:
who are you -- remains of enemies, or of brothers?
will an answer be: mute horror
and white foam on his own mouth.

And so long will he look and not understand,
until he will begin in fear to flee
with eyes out and hands forward,
and run like this generation in -- generation out.
His running ever greater -- the greater the fears.
he will run like this until the end of generations --
and we will lie, as until now,
a hard neck -- and nothing more at all.

Forge with the hammer,
forge chains, forge:
to the convict-chamber
are still fresh my steps.
In one of the drawers
lies still whole my prison-garb,
which I keep in trust
