When I draw down the curtains

Work 101 of 440

Page 115. Moon poem conclusion: Even when the curtains are drawn and the speaker is in 'seventh darkness,' the moon watches anyway. 'Who' (Ver): A meditation on self-imprisonment. Who seated me at the table, bound me to the chair, closed everything, lit a fire over me? The speaker cannot see or hear beyond the furniture, which grows more powerful over him. The devastating realization: 'Not from anyone but from myself alone / did a fire kindle over me.' 'Leave Me, Forget' (Farloz Mikh, Farges): Longing braids itself like a rope around the speaker. He lacks the courage to pull the noose himself, to hasten the end. In house or street, his glance turns to every passerby: 'Someone pull the rope.' A chilling portrait of passive suicidal ideation, the desire for release without agency.

English Translation

When I draw down the curtains

and am again in the seventh darkness —

the moon looks down anyway.

Who

Who seated me at the table,

who bound me to this chair?

Who closed door and window,

kindled a fire over me?

My eyes look at the table,

my fingers press against my forehead —

can my eyes see you?

Can my ear hear your speech?

My eyes can see nothing

and my ear cannot hear you,

table and chair and wall and window

become more powerful over me.

The table forged me to itself,

the chair bound me to itself:

not from anyone but from myself alone

did a fire kindle over me.

Leave Me, Forget

Leave me, forget —

it braids itself like a rope around me

my longing for you.

I have no courage

to pull the rope with my own hands,

to hasten the end.

In house or in street

to every passerby my glance turns:

— Someone pull the rope.
