Work 402 of 440

Page 469. Continuation of 'Nakht getreye' (Night Faithful): 'fiber' (fever) chases through trees. Shadow dances 'vi shiker' (as if drunk). Speaker's shadow 'a shlang in griber' (a snake in ditches), 'tsehakt oyf shtiker' (chopped to pieces). Asks for 'nakht fun simbol' (night of symbol), 'nakht fun velder, nakht fun fayer' (night of forests, fire). New poem 'Ful zol zayn di freyd' (May the Joy Be Full): body consumed in fire, blood burns, earth shakes. Voice echoes 'in duneridikn resh' (in thunderous noise — Hebrew 'ra'ash'). Ready to become 'bergl esh' (little mound of ash). If not recognized in life, take ashes on fingers. Scatter and spread over all earth. Cremation mysticism. New poem 'Azoy vi hunger' (Like Hunger): stilled sorrow with word as hunger with bread. Felt power of word 'vi makht fun toyt' (like power of death).

English Translation

Through all trees a fever chases,

the shadows dance around as if drunk,

and my shadow — a snake in ditches —

it throws itself chopped to pieces.

The night comes. — oh, faithful night,

give night of symbol, not of mist,

only night of forests, night of fire, —

take me forever into your depths.

May the Joy Be Full

In fire the body is consumed,

in blood the fire burns;

below the earth shakes,

all four walls are breaking.

My voice echoes with joy

in thunderous noise:

I'm ready, am ready, am ready,

to become a little mound of ash.

If you didn't recognize me

in living body, —

on fingers of your hands

take up my ash.

And may the joy be full

even more than is destined,

scatter me and spread me

over all, all the earth.

Like Hunger

More than once I've stilled sorrow with a word,

as one stills hunger with bread;

but more than once I've also felt on myself

the power of the word, like the power of death.
