Page 397. 'A briv fun Amerike' continuation: the cellar 'sod' (secret — Hebrew) is 'eybik ofn' (eternally open). It draws him 'vi kishef' (like magic — Hebrew) to 'oyskholemen dos vos ikh bin' (dream out what I am). He must demand 'an ibershats' (excess) from himself to remember childhood's 'reynkayt' (purity), the 'bayshpil un heylikayt fun verter' (example and holiness of words), 'gvure fun tsorn un gebet' (heroism of anger and prayer — Hebrew 'gvura'), 'vagung tsu veln zayn a basherte' (daring to be destined), his boyish 'troym vegn poet' (dream of being a poet). Descending to 'oremste lekher' (poorest holes), 'reyktes fun noyt' (smells of need) pour over him; he absorbs like 'a shvom' (a sponge). 'Gegort hent' (belted hands) embrace him, feverish lung breathes on him; his words become 'tsarter oyf a tsveyter tsung' (more tender on another tongue). He covers 'dem fartsitertn guf' (the trembling body) with 'kushn, vi mit a zudikn regn' (kisses, like bubbling rain). 'Noyt, noyt!' (Need!) — with you 'bin ikh a higer' (I am at home). Whether thin lips or Negro's swollen lips. He looks at them 'fartsaplt, frum' (transfixed, pious) — the more 'der dzhentlmen fun der blonder ere' (gentleman of blond honor) surrounds them 'mit zayn vayser sine' (with his white hatred — Hebrew 'sina'). Anti-racist solidarity.

There is secret, but eternally open,
and like magic it draws me there
into the cellars to come hoping
and dream out what I am.
And to demand from myself and exact
an excess of my entire wealth:
into the cellar to come to remember
the purity of my childhood days.
The example and holiness of words,
the heroism of anger and prayer,
the daring to want to be a destined one,
my boyish dream about a poet.
I descend into the poorest holes,
the smells of need pour over me,
I drink myself full, as with drink from a goblet
until I become full with them like a sponge.
Belted hands begin to embrace me,
a feverish lung breathes upon me:
and my words hot, tender
become more tender on another tongue.
I let myself be embraced, I don't resist,
such light rises over everything,
and with kisses, like with bubbling rain,
I cover the trembling body.
Need, need! With you I am at home,
whether you greet me brief with a thin mouth, —
or with swollen lips of a Negro —
stretched apart, negligent, lazy.
The lips the Negro's, the lips the heavy —
at them I look quite transfixed, pious —
the more the gentleman of the blond honor
with his white hatred surrounds them.
