English Translation

That fate has gathered us together,

and will never unbind the knot,

one thirst on both our palates,

and one sharpness on our lip.

And though we don't know each other:

we cut into the heart like a wedge,

and when we part — even parted

we carry away in ourselves some new sense.

A sense of guarantee for words and deeds,

responsibility for every turn and wall,

and if one somewhere betrays the responsibility —

the second will somewhere break with his hands.

The day passes, and the shops close,

we pour out like ants,

the street lamps greet us with evening

and the trains begin to take us home.

Rows, rows over avenues and squares,

in the hearts such holiday-like anxiety:

it has not yet become what it should become,

and not yet come what you demand.

And something laments in you with a riddle's lament,

and something sings in you with a god's song,

as to a wedding together with a funeral

the rows go over the evening city.

Walls fly torn up to the sky,

surrounded with a fiery wheel:

New York's gold — but not New York's conscience:

and not the secret of her beauty either.

To see New York's secret and conscience,

one must not lift heads to the sky —

one must not close any locks and lock up,

but descend into a cellar down steps.
