Page 105. 'There Is No Hiding Place' (Nito keyn Baheltеnish): A devastating poem of total exposure. The hidden one has left his hiding place — now he faces sun and wind with naked body, unable to scream out his last cry though it tears at his lungs. Wounds heal, eyes dissolve in brightness, but the scream cannot come. All his persecutors are 'long gone' — yet he cannot say of himself 'gone.' The silent one has lost his silence, the cursed one cannot return to hiding. This may reflect Leivick's experience of torture and exposure, the survivor who lives on past his persecutors but cannot escape the trauma.

English Translation

There Is No Hiding Place

There is no hiding place.

There is no word anymore that leads back to hiding.

Facing the sun — with an open head,

facing the wind — with a naked body.

He swallows with his eyes the east and west

and licks with his tongue his dried lip.

The hidden one — woe to him —

he has abandoned his hiding place.

He stands and tears from his lungs

his last cries

and cannot

scream out the last scream.

Bloody wounds are covered with skin,

dark eyes are sunk in brightness —

so too his wounds are covered with skin

and his extinguished eyes dissolve in brightness:

but his screams that tear apart the lungs,

they cannot

scream out the last scream.

The silent one — woe to him —

he has lost his silence.

Open before him is the whole world,

and all paths are naked, like his naked body.

The one who tore off his clothes

is long gone. Gone.

The one who thrust into him the last knife

is long gone, gone.

The one who led out the flaming sun over him

is long gone, gone.

But he himself cannot yet say of himself the word:

'Gone, gone.'

He has not yet screamed out from his lungs

his last cry.

The cursed one — woe to him —

there is no word anymore that leads back to hiding.
