Work 371 of 440

Page 436. Conclusion of 'Mayn vig-lid': wild goat carries father 'vi an odler gring' (like an eagle light), swallows 'grenets fun merkhokes' (borders of distances — Hebrew 'merchavim'). Hurrying ends in 'genareray' (deception), day 'farbay' (past). Father 'ligt an otem' (lies breathless) in last gleam — 'fargis un shotn' (forget and shadow). 'Ovntiker von' (evening haze) spreads. 'Betler-oremon' (beggar-poor man) appears at threshold. Dances to oven, 'beygl-meyvn' (bagel-expert) — sticks head in. Swallows everything 'mit eyn geshlung' (in one gulp), drinks 'kakhedikn trunk' (boiling drink). Flies into 'koymen' (chimney) with whole body, hangs 'fis aroyf' (feet up) — death/inversion image. Final stanza: 'vos di lipn stamlen' (what lips mumble), 'nakht lesht oys di flamen' (night extinguishes flames). Concluding refrain: 'shlof, neshome mayn' (sleep, my soul). Surreal, nightmarish lullaby blending poverty, folk motifs, and death.

English Translation

The wild goat carries him,

like an eagle light,

borders of distances

he swallows swallow after swallow.

And in the midst of hurrying,

see — deception:

end to all the miles,

and the day past.

Father lies without breath

in a last gleam.

and forget and shadow —

sleep, my life, in.

Over the room spreads

evening haze,

on the threshold appears

a beggar-poor man.

He dances up to the oven,

sticks his head in,

such a bagel-expert

who else could be?

He grabs and swallows

everything in one gulp,

and then he drinks down

a boiling drink.

And a fly into the chimney

with his whole body,

remains thus in the chimney

hanging feet up.

What the lips mumble.

Should it be a bucket?

night extinguishes the flames —

sleep, my soul.
