Page 122. 'The Simulant' (Der Simulant): One of Leivick's great prison poems based on his experience in Russian katorga (penal labor). The 'tsentral' refers to a Russian central prison. Behind thick walls, gates, and grates, the tower-like prison sleeps. The city clock strikes midnight: twelve booms. At that signal, the simulant — one who after weeks, months, years of patient imprisonment has drunk the poisonous lime concoction — tears off his cover, turns face to ceiling, opens his 'otherworldly eyes.' He dared to begin the great play with himself alone: 'the play of freedom from all freedoms, the play of blinding light.' He leaps to door and window, the red fire blazes in his eyes. The clock returns to one. The poison is forgotten, the contorted fingers straighten, the innards no longer press to throat — now those fingers dance on broken glass...

English Translation

The Simulant

Behind thick walls and locks,

behind gates and grates,

sleeps the tower-like extinguished central prison.

And the city clock strikes its hours

the early-night ones, then the midnight ones:

twelve times boom.

When the city clock strikes its twelve times boom —

then he tears off his grey cover,

turns over with his face to the ceiling,

and opens his otherworldly eyes

the one —

who has, after weeks and months and years

of patient imprisonment,

pulled his hand to the poisonous drink of lime,

touched it with his mouth and drunk gulp after gulp.

Dared to begin the great play with himself alone,

the play of freedom from all freedoms

the play of blinding light.

A fling to the ground of the cover,

a ringing leap to door and window,

and — blazed up the red fire of the eyes.

The city clock, after striking twelve times boom,

turns back to the beginning — to one.

One time boom, and nothing more —

then the poisonous drink is long forgotten

the tips of fingers of feet and hands

are straightened back,

and the innards of belly no longer press to the throat.

The tips of fingers of feet and hands

dance over pieces of glass from windows,
