New poem 'Tsvey' (Two): powerful execution/martyrdom scene. One carries 'a knip' (knot) on neck, one a flower 'in shand' (in shame). 'Farmshpte' (condemned) go 'georemt' (arm-in-arm) to 'hinrikhtung-plats' (execution place). 'Homon' (mob — Hebrew) besieges streets, treating it like 'yontev-parad' (holiday parade — Hebrew 'yomtov'). No one knows their guilt. 'Zey geyen... azoy vi tsu der khupe — tsum toyt' (they go as to wedding canopy — to death — Hebrew 'chupa'). Dawn spreads the canopy, it ignites. Mob 'hulyet, tupet' (revels, stomps), grabs 'shayter' (kindling). The two — 'tsvey gufn' (two bodies) — call out 'farkishuft ruf' (enchanted call), and miracle: 'fun tsvey vert eyn flamiker guf' (from two becomes one flaming body). the mob considers itself a party,
it drums and whistles and rattles
as if for a holiday parade.
No one knows the guilt of the two,
and who ordered them to die: —
one only sees — they go, they go
as if to the wedding canopy — to death.
The dawn spreads apart the canopy,
the canopy ignites and burns:
the mob — it revels, it stomps,
grabs pieces of kindling with hands.
The two — two bodies apart —
call out an enchanted call,
and all behold a wonder:
how from two becomes one flaming body.
A fever takes everyone through,
the mob falls to the earth,
until from all together remains
a small hill of ashes.
No one asks anyone questions,
whether one returns after death:
and they snatch the hill of ashes
