Page 289. 'Nyu-York' conclusion and 'Rod fun lastvogn' (Wheel of Truck) begins. The speaker feels an approaching 'keper' (executioner/headsman) sharpened on the 'sharfshteyn fun geduld' (whetstone of patience) — revolutionary figure raised in cellars and factories. The address to America: to know 'naye heym' (new home), the speaker stretches across the street until burning with 'blutikn fayer fun rase un klas' (bloody fire of race and class). Then the devastating urban poem: a truck wheel kills a child, emptying mother's hands. The mechanical continuation: cemetery, burial, return home, sleep, wake, dress, wash, rush to work via subway and el (elevated train) — 'Drayantsvantsik, Nay' (23rd, 9th — street names). The garment shop details: 'shnaydmeser, pres, nodl, shtep' (cutting knife, press, needle, stitch). The circular horror: 'nokhamol a rod fun a lastvogn kumt on' (again a truck wheel arrives) — death repeats in the industrial city.
צו די טויערן פֿון סקווערן נעענטערט זיך דער קעפּער;

Sometimes a freezing tremor falls on me,
and I wrestle with myself as with barbed wire,
and I know I will pay for it bitterly,
because there is an executioner, I hear his approaching step.
To the gates of squares approaches the headsman;
ready to behead for every remembered guilt,
he was raised in cellars, in factories, in shops,
and sharpened his axe on the whetstone of patience.
America, new home — to know you
I stretch myself out with my body across the longest street,
until my clothes and my body begin to burn
with your bloody fire of race and class.
Wheel of Truck
A wheel of a truck takes and kills the child,
and leaves the mother's two hands empty:
the mother's face takes and becomes distorted,
and her shoulders take and scrape themselves away along the wall.
Cemetery. Grave. Hidden weeping,
the broad shovel covers the grave.
One turns away the face and lets oneself go —
one goes, one rides — until one comes back home.
When one comes home — it's surely good:
one must let the tired body rest, —
so one takes and lies down, one takes and rests,
and with the rising of day one rises again.
One puts on clothes, one washes up,
one hurries to work — a bite, a grab —
subway, el — Twenty-third, Ninth —
to the minute, to the second — at the machine in the shop.
Cutting knife. Press. Needle. Stitch.
Office. Show window, stylish, passé —
again, again a cut, a drag —
again a wheel of a truck arrives.
