Again the sidewalk lies soaked with blood,

Page 290. 'Rod fun lastvogn' conclusion: the cycle continues — 'nokhamol' (again) the sidewalk bloody, hands empty, gravedigger at work, face forever 'krum' (crooked/twisted). Then 'Nit bavundern' (Don't Admire) — a poetics of violence: don't caress with 'farvigndike verter' (lulling words) but 'hamern, shplitern, fertlen' (hammer, splinter, quarter). The 'vortbrukh' (word-breach) should wound; self-admiration should foam bitter. Better to sit 'farkrokhn' (crouched) and 'farglivert un knokhik' (stiffened and bony) — but once silence breaks, there's no return: 'tseshturemte knokhn' (stormy bones) dance on the broken pieces. Then 'Sobvey-baginen' (Subway Dawn) — the morning commute as existential condition: crush of 'nokh nit oyfgevakhte gufn' (not yet awakened bodies), knees and elbows clamped, chasing to shops and factories. The 'fargezang' (pre-song) of silent impatience is born.
צוויי ליידיקע הענט באַמבלען ווידער זיך אַרום;
Nokhamol der bruk ligt fargosn mit blut,
tsvey leydike hent bamblen vider zikh arum;
nokhamol der kvorim-greber zayn melokhe tut,
un nokhamol a ponim vert oyf eybik krum.
Nit bavundern
Nit bavundern, nit tsertlen
in freyd in oysgetsertert

nor hamern — shplitern, fertlen.
Un vortbrukh un shpliter
zol vundikn, vundikn! —

Sobvey-baginen
Iz gedrang fun nokh nit oyfgevakhte gufn.
In farklakerung fun knien un fun elnboygns,
in yogenish tsu sheper, tsu fabrikn,
vert geboyrn dos baginendike fargezang —
fargezang fun shvaygndikn umgeduld,
Again the sidewalk lies soaked with blood,
two empty hands dangle around again;
again the gravedigger does his work,
and again a face becomes forever crooked.
Don't Admire
Don't admire, don't caress
in joy in tenderly drawn-out
lulling words, —
but hammer — splinter, quarter.
And word-breach and splinter
should wound, wound! —
and the torment of self-admiration
should foam up bitter.
And lips that whisper whispers
remain hanging swollen
in fever of echoing only
the sorrow of need of the sweetened.
Life is harsh and powerful,
and under the harsh powers
better already to sit crouched
and be silent, stiffened and bony.
But once the silence is broken: —
there is no return:
on word-breach, on pieces
dance stronger stormy bones.
Subway Dawn
Is the crush of not yet awakened bodies.
In the clamping of knees and of elbows,
in the chase to shops, to factories,
is born the dawning pre-song —
pre-song of silent impatience,
