Guard

Work 22 of 440

Page 30. 'Vekhter' (Guard) addresses the jailer with ironic compassion — you too need rest, I'm already bewitched by the black mouse's magic circles, you can stop watching. 'Nito mer keyn trern' (No More Tears) is a brutal prison poem: no tears or laughter remain, bodies are beaten with iron rods, those who fear flatter the guard, all are shadows in a death chamber. The defiant final line: 'rattle your chains!'

English Translation

Guard

Guard, go and lay yourself down to sleep,

take your eye off the door:

the night is given for rest

for me as well as for you.

Set your rifle by the gate,

rest your head against the table:

from walking around all day

your feet surely ache.

No one will come here

and no one will get out:

in a circle around my bed

dances a black mouse.

Dances around and spreads out nets,

magic circles around me,

I am already bewitched, guard,

take your eye off the door.

No More Tears

No more tears

and no laughter either:

powerless is the good one,

so too the bad one.

The bodies lashed

with iron rods:

and whoever is afraid

flatters the guard.

We all — like shadows

in a chamber of the dead.

And if the silence frightens you,

then — rattle your chains!
