Darwin
I read Darwin — the book of our ancestry,
and around me and above me the smell of carbolic,
thermometers, and milk, and iodine —
and so much stillness gathered for once.
No more need for details, no more strokes,
no need for wonder, and also no fear;
here I go away from myself,
and will go farther still and farther away.
The good grandfather Darwin brought me
gifts — wonders — in a full sack;
the day passes, the evening comes, the night —
and here my primordial father strokes my cheek with paws.
Such dear nails of yours, my father,
such a curled red-fiery pelt;
oh take me strongly into your arms,
and bring me home to your female, to your threshold.
Primordial father mine, orangutan,
lost I have wandered in a foreign land.
Now I pull from my heart such a song,
such a lament-longing for my jungle-land.
The distant, sweet, childish days —
father used to dance around on big feet,
and swing on the highest trees, on his tail,
and throw down for us mountains of nuts.
For us — the little apes. And I —
the eldest ape I was — the firstborn —
would show tricks, how I jump and climb,
and how I pluck from myself handfuls of hair.
And how I make a sudden quick leap,
and here I am already with father in the heights,
and right back a swing, a sway,
and fall down onto mother's soft belly.
