Clouds Behind the Forest
Work 357 of 440
Page 415. Beginning of 'Volkns ahintern vald' (Clouds Behind the Forest), dated 1930 — a long prose-poem. Doesn't seek her address; face to all streets, eyes to all houses. Day 'arumgeringlt mit libshaft un murnures' (surrounded by love and murmurs). Every corner a hope, her beauty 'hoyert' (lurks) on every threshold. Content with 'a vunk... a flister' (wink, whisper). Speaks 'ofn un prost' (openly, simply) like a letter — 'afilu tsu got' (even to God). Let 'ale' (all) read — no hidden 'kavones' (intentions — Hebrew 'kavvanot'). Imagines a person near though 'nito gor' (not there at all) — holds his hand, parts, watches him vanish. 'Modne dos shpil' (strange the play) of eyes, lips, words. 'Vifl yorn' (how many years) plowing heart and 'marekh' (brain) with 'tseyner fun oysyes' (teeth of letters). Clothes screams in rhythmic sounds. 'Tsirufim fun zilbn' (recombinations of syllables), sealed books as cabinet filling. Suddenly 'a boygn a vayser' (white sheet), head 'funandergabliter in groyen' (blooming in gray), eye seeking first letter — beginning. Like 'yinglshdike yorn di blonde' (blonde boyish years), life cries 'nokh frayhayt' (for freedom).

Clouds Behind the Forest
(1930)
I don't seek the name of your street and I don't seek the number of your house.
My face — to all streets, and my eyes — to all houses.
A day in my life today — a day surrounded by love and murmurs:
every corner is a hope, and on every threshold your beauty lurks.
It's good for me to look at people and in every one see your gaze.
And from everyone's face may your radiance reflect upon me.
I content myself with a wink, with a memory of a whisper,
I sing to you and I guard your beauty faithfully and fearfully.
I speak to you openly and simply. With a full breath. Let it seem
that I write such a letter. — For even to God in the heavens
it's sometimes possible, that a person should speak as one speaks in a letter,
especially to you, who come to meet me on dreamed paths. —
Let people read it. All. All. And let them not seek
in my words any hidden meaning, any concealed intentions,
and let them not say they already know my way and my words from before.
I imagine a person close to me — and the person beside me is not there at all —
nevertheless I say: I see him beside me and hold his hand in mine.
And I bless myself with him and part with him, and he goes away,
and I look after him, and I stop looking, because he vanishes entirely,
and I don't know to which street and to which threshold his steps turn.
Strange is the play of human eyes and lips. Stranger still
the play of words. How many years and years have I plowed my heart
and also my brain with the sharp, with the pointed teeth of letters,
and clothed in rhythmic sounds screaming and weeping, and ashamed smile,
lamentation of loneliness and longing for what has passed. And for what will come. —
Recombinations of syllables, stitching of lines into sealed books,
for cabinets as filling: and now suddenly — a white sheet,
and over the white sheet — a head blooming in gray,
and an eye that seeks again and again a first letter — a beginning.
Just like once, long ago, in the blonde boyish years,
and just like once life cries again with a cutting cry for freedom.
