And everyone in joy of astonishment

Work 9 of 440

Page 17. This page concludes the messianic poem from page 16 and contains two more poems: 'Mayns' (Mine) expressing radical belonging and wanderer's freedom — wherever the speaker goes becomes his home. 'In yedns harts' (In Everyone's Heart) develops the theme of universal human connection — there is light in every heart, and one need only knock to be welcomed. The revelation that 'you were here the whole time' speaks to recognition of the familiar in the stranger.

English Translation

And everyone in joy of astonishment

taken with trembling.

Will barely say: oh look —

he has already come.

Mine

From one house out, into the next one in!

And everywhere I will be a welcome guest.

To go out — leaving the door open,

and no one will look after me behind.

And everyone will know: it's surely my step,

a city I will find — the city is mine.

And what I will wear — that will be my garment,

and what I will eat — that will be my bread.

And when I come — it will never be late,

and where I will sleep — there is my bed.

In Everyone's Heart

I know: in everyone's heart there is

a brightness, a glow:

on whatever threshold you may stand —

knock and go in.

And you go in, they look at you —

it doesn't take long,

they have been longing for you long,

mourning in silence.

They thought: you are in a foreign land,

cast off somewhere far,

and didn't know that you were here

the whole time.
