עפן זיך פונאַנדער, ערד,
זיי געגרייט פּאַר מיר,
ווי איך בין פּאַר דיר געגרייט ! --
לייטער אויס דיינע שטויבן פּאַר מיר,
וי איך האָב אויסגעלייטערט פּאַר דיר מיינע גלידער :
זע ערד,
ט לייג איך זיך אויף דיר אַנידער.
מיינע אַלע פּאַרלאַנגען זיינען מקויים געוואָרן
מיינע אַלע געבעטן זיינען געוואזרן דערהערט,

mayne ale gebetn zaynen gevorn derhert,

Tsu vemen mayn guf gehert,
gehern oykh himl un erd,
un oykh ot dos shtikl papir,

A Bright Beginning
A bright beginning lies spread above me; —
open yourself, earth,
be ready for me,
as I am ready for you; —
purify your dust for me,
as I have purified my limbs for you;
see, earth,
here I lay myself down on you.
All my desires have been fulfilled,
all my prayers have been heard,
and all my sins and all my transgressions
I have openly confessed to the world as in confession.
To whom my body belongs,
belongs also heaven and earth,
and also this piece of paper,
which I touch, perhaps, with a last touch.
heaven and earth are large,
but this piece of paper is larger,
and the word on the piece of paper — still larger.
I will sing the last word —
so I have said to myself more than once;
but, truly, see — the last word
like a spring, like a just-opened one, beats,
and truly, see — the last word
is never, never last;
I lie, as on an open field,
on a bed of an autumn world,
and from the earth with a dew like a breath rises,
and I wait, my friend, for you,
I wait for you to come; —
