סאָניע לעווין

,מיין בלייכע חבֿר'טע איז געשטאָרבן

,נאָר ווי פריער לעבט זי אין מיין זעל

,און יעדעס מאָל, ווי ס'קומט די נאַכט

.שטייט זי פריינטלעך אויף מיין שוועל

זי קוקט אויף מיר ווי אַלעמאָל

,מיט אויגן שטיל פאַרטראַכט

,אַ גאַנצן טאָג איז אומעטיק

.נאָר זי באַלעבט מיין נאַכט

,נאָר ווייטער גייט זי ניט צו מיר

,און שטייט אַלץ אויפן שוועל

,און גייט אַוועק מיט שטילע טריט

.ווי ס'ווערט נאָר עטוואָס העל

Mayn blaykhe Khaver'te iz geshtorbn,

Nor vi frier lebt zi in mayn Zel,

Un yedes mol, vi s'kumt di Nakht,

Shteyt zi frayntlekh oyf mayn Shvel.

Zi kukt oyf mir vi alemol

Mit Oygn shtil fartrakht,

A gantsn Tog iz umetik,

Nor zi balebt mayn Nakht.

Nor vayter geyt zi nit tsu mir,

Un shteyt alts oyfn Shvel,

Un geyt avek mit shtile Trit,

Vi s'vert nor etvos hel.

English Translation

Sonie Levin

My pale friend has died,

but as before she lives in my ,

and every time when night comes,

she stands friendly at my .

She looks at me as always

with eyes quietly thoughtful,

the whole day is sorrowful,

but she brings life to my night.

But further she does not come to me,

and just stands at the threshold,

and walks away with quiet steps,

as soon as it becomes somewhat light.
