אָט ערשט געווען אויפן בוים

! און איצט וואָגלען זיי, וואָגלען זיי, וואָגלען זיי

וואָגלען אין רוים און היים

.ביז עס פאַרדעקט זיי דער שניי

צעבראָכן, צעקנייטשטע, צעריבן

פאַרזשאַווערט, צעברוינט און פאַרגעלט

פון האַרבסטיקע ווינטן געטריבן

.זיי לאָזן זיך איבער דער וועלט

שאַרן זיך לאַנג אויף די וועגן

,וויגן זיך, קוליען זיך איבער

,צעבייטשטע פון ווינט און פון רעגן

,פאַלן אין גראָזן און גריבער

Un itst voglen zey, voglen zey, voglen zey!

Voglen in Roym un Heym

Biz es fardekt zey der Shney.

Tsebrokhn, tsekneytshte, tseribn

Farzhavert, tsebroynt un fargelt

Fun harbstike Vintn getribn

Zey lozn zikh iber der Velt.

Sharn zikh lang oyf di Vegn

Vign zikh, kulyen zikh iber,

Tsebaytshte fun Vint un fun Regn,

Faln in Grozn un Griber,

Un lozn zikh vider in Vegn

In likhtike harbstike Teg.

English Translation

Leaves

Just now they were on the tree

and now they wander, they wander, they wander!

wandering in space and in home

until the snow covers them.

Broken, crumpled, worn

weathered, browned and yellowed

driven by autumn winds

they let themselves go over the world.

Rustling long on the roads

swaying, rolling over,

whipped by wind and rain,

falling into grasses and ditches,

and setting off again on journeys

in bright autumn days.
