Mute-prayer in death-danger — for the one who sees the joy of sorrow.' This paradoxical prayer encapsulates the poem's theodicy: sorrow hidden in joy, joy hidden in sorrow. 'Wrapped in death-danger glows, stilled, longing sorrow.' Section KAF (20): The younger brother's litany of grace (gnod): 'Grace that is in joy, grace in sorrow, grace in death.' His poor body 'dressed in rags rises up with arms spread' — the cruciform image of Jewish martyrdom. The extended refrain: 'Grace in heroism, grace in beauty, grace in eternity' — the fugitive finds divine grace even in extremity, perhaps especially there.
