שפרייטסט פּאַר מיר אַ טיש אין ווייסן,
You spread for me a table in white,
Work 419 of 440
Pages 493-494. Continuation of 'Spinoze' poem: Section IX 'Ze vi veynik' (See How Little I Ask). Opens with 'tish in vaysn' (table in white) and 'royter vayn' (red wine) - Eucharistic/Passover imagery. 'Mizrekh in baginen' = the east at dawn, also the mizrach wall where Jews pray toward Jerusalem. 'Fon fun gnod' (banner of grace) - Hebrew 'khesed' concept. 'Fatale vaytkatn' (fatal distances) - Romance loan 'fatal'. 'Levone' = moon (Hebrew). 'Vayrekh' = incense (Hebrew). 'Tfile' = prayer (Hebrew). 'Got fun der tifenish' echoes Psalm 130: 'Mi-ma'amakim' (Out of the depths). 'Eyver tsu eyver' (limb to limb) - intimate communion with the divine, recalling Jacob wrestling the angel. The entire section builds through mystical ascent: flight, moon, childhood innocence, incense, prayer, divine descent, physical union with God. Conclusion of Section IX dream sequence: beloved opens door and lies down 'tsvishn beydn' (between both) - God, speaker, and beloved in mystical union on the threshold. Section X 'Gebentsht gezang' (Blessed Song): 'gebentsht' = blessed (Hebrew 'barukh'). 'Bitokhn' = trust/faith (Hebrew). 'Shokhn' = neighbor (Hebrew). 'Khelek' = portion/share (Hebrew). 'Nisyen' = trial/test (Hebrew). 'Mekuyem' = fulfilled (Hebrew). 'Brokhe' = blessing (Hebrew). Nature mysticism: learning from trees and grass. Section XI 'Tsvey mol tsvey iz fir' begins: mathematical death meditation. 'Tavedig' = lustful/desirous. 'Fel' = skin/hide. 'Zel' = soul. The soul, freed from body, counts - arithmetic as spiritual exercise. The number 100 at top appears to be a page/section marker in original.

XI
Tsvey mol tsvey iz fir
Di tavedig fel
fun guf aropgesheylt --
vos tut mayn reyne zel --
zi tseylt, zi tseylt,
You spread for me a table in white,
red wine glows in the goblet --
let there only appear on the threshold
a dust-wave from my steps.
Wherever I may find myself,
I see fluttering, illuminated,
like the east at dawn
a banner of grace upon your tent.
IX
See How Little
1. See how little I desire:
to take flight as if on wings
through all fatal distances,
and reach the steps of your threshold.
To stretch out my hand to the moon,
it is today so white, poured out --
and pull it down
to the steps of your threshold.
To turn my face to childhood,
to grab a handful of gold-hair
and kindle it like incense,
and envelop the steps of your threshold.
To raise my voice in prayer:
-- I call to you, God of the depths --
and God hears my calling
and descends to your threshold.
To touch God with my face,
and then lie down with Him
limb to limb, and doze off
with Him on the steps of your threshold.
100
And in the doze see how you open
the door, -- come out and you lie down
together with us between both
and doze with us on your threshold.
X
Blessed Song
Blessed song of all songs
in the bright sun of midday --
my poem has risen in you --
in the last joy that I possess.
I learn trust from the tree,
I learn rest from the grasses:
I bow to the near neighbor --
a portion of rest I share with him.
And wonder upon wonder I do
in falling-down-ness to the earth,
I bless the distant world from here --
my blessing must now be heard.
It must -- in the power of all trials
what I foretell is fulfilled:
blessed song of the last hour
in the bright sun of midday.
XI
Two Times Two Is Four
The lustful skin
peeled from the body --
what does my pure soul do --
it counts, it counts,
