The clouds turn around
Work 389 of 440
Page 454. Continuation of 'Shteyner — mayne brider': clouds 'dreyen zikh in knoyln' (turn in tangles), soaked with 'groyln' (horror), ready for more. Sun, meet tomorrow, still soaked — just open 'an oyg, a lip' (an eye, a lip). 'Zayln shtoyb' (pillars of dust) dance in sun. At 'letstn otem' (last breath) believe you matter. From below through 'shikhtn erd' (layers of earth), heard 'dem bunt fun ale buntn' (the covenant of all covenants — 'brit'). 'Yomer fun yisurim' (lament of suffering — Hebrew 'ya'amor', 'yisurim') in stillest syllable. Storm outbreak in smallest 'milb' (moth). 'Tserisn in kamf mit zikh aleyn' (torn in struggle with self). World 'reyn' (clean) in blood of conscience. Calls 'shteyner — brider' (stones — brothers). 'Dos lid fun ale lider' (song of all songs — echoes Song of Songs). 'Mayn libshaft geyt ersht oyf' (my love just rises). Mystical union of suffering, earth, cosmos.

דורך אלע שיכטן ערד;
Es dreyen zikh in knoyln
di volkns hin un her,
bin ongezoft mit groyln,
un bin nokh greyt oyf mer.
Di zun, oyf morgn, trefn
nokh ayngezoftn groyl, —
nor eynmol tu an efn
an oyg, a lip fun moyl.
Un ze, vi s'tantsn likhtik
in zun di zayln shtoyb; —
oykh du, vi zi bist vikhtik,
baym letstn otem gloyb.
Un gloyb, az oykh fun untn,
durkh ale shikhtn erd,
dem bunt fun ale buntn
hostu durkh zikh derhert.
Dem yomer fun yisurim
in yeder shtilster zilb;
dem oysbrukh fun a shturem
in gor der klenster milb.
Derhert — un zikh tserisn
in kamf mit zikh aleyn;
in blut fun dayn gevisn
iz velt gevorn reyn.
Ikh ruf aykh, shteyner, — brider,
ikh drik tsu aykh mayn guf; —
dos lid fun ale lider —
mayn libshaft — geyt ersht oyf.
The clouds turn around
in tangles back and forth,
I am soaked with horror,
and am still ready for more.
The sun, to meet tomorrow
still soaked with horror, —
just once do an opening
of an eye, a lip of the mouth.
And see, how brightly dance
in the sun the pillars of dust; —
you too, how important you are,
at the last breath believe.
And believe, that also from below,
through all the layers of earth,
the covenant of all covenants
you have heard through yourself.
The lament of suffering
in every stillest syllable;
the outbreak of a storm
in the very smallest moth.
Heard — and torn apart
in struggle with yourself;
in the blood of your conscience
the world became clean.
I call you, stones, — brothers,
I press my body to you; —
the song of all songs —
my love — just now rises.
