My True Song

Page 365. 'Mayn emese lid' (My True Song): the true poem lies in thought, in 'ingeveid fun papirenem boygn' (bowels of a paper sheet) — the unwritten potential. Born in an innocent night, it sees 'a velt fun loytern bagin' (a world of pure beginning). When grown-up sons come toward the parents with 'bavunderung un badoyer' (wonder and regret), they want to speak, then scatter — parents bow as distances swallow them. The 'heyliker bund' (holy covenant) of family, but something holier still: a spark that burns all in flames. 'Libshaft' (Love): 'dem emes fun vort' (the truth of word — Hebrew 'emes') is like the truth of death. Death has blonde hair, word silver-gray — 'aza vunderlekhe por' (such a wondrous pair). When life 'tut mikh a shlayder' (hurls me), they call 'kum, kum' (come, come), strengthening with 'groys libshaft' (great love). Their smile redeems much that is 'fayn' (fine/painful — the pun on Yiddish 'fayn').

My True Song
My true song to you still lies in thought,
in the bowels of a paper sheet!
It is born in an innocent night
and opens innocent eyes.
It sees a world of pure beginning
a world, that we dream out in loving sorrow,
when toward us come our grown-up sons
and look at us with wonder and regret.
They want to say something, they stop —
and tear themselves suddenly to all sides: —
we accompany them with a deep bow of the head
until the farthest distances swallow them.
Between father and child there is a holy covenant,
there is also such a covenant between father and mother:
but there is something even holier — a spark, that ignites,
and burns us all, all in flames.
Love
The truth of word
I perceive like the truth of death,
I see them always paired —
they accompany me with great love.
Death has blonde hair,
the word — silver-gray,
such a wondrous pair —
they love me with great love.
They embrace me,
when life hurls me sometimes,
they call me: come, come,
they strengthen me with great love.
Their smile — what should it be?
Should it be happiness itself? —
see, how much fine, fine, fine
they redeem in great love.
