His body throws itself. all walls shake

Work 433 of 440

Pages 513-515. Nathan's death throes: 'kerper varft zikh' (body throws itself), walls shake 'vi platsnike dambes' (like bursting dams). 'Virbl-vint' = whirlwind. 'Kalter shveys' from 'shlayfn' (temples) - cold sweat dripping. 'Bloye reyfn' = blue rings around eyes - sign of death. The poet is 'farshlung' (swallowed) into Nathan's dying. 'Sod fun fay' = secret of fire - mystical transformation. 'Hekh-er-flet' = high-fever (modified German 'Fieber'). The whole 'shpitol' (hospital) is engulfed in flame. 'Shkheynim-patsientn' = neighbor-patients. 'Gezang tsum toyt derkent' = song recognized unto death. Climactic imagery: 'di Rakis tlien' (Rockies melt) under 'shvartsn roykh' (black smoke). Final line: 'di Rakis leshn zikh, un Niuman -- oykh' (the Rockies extinguish, and Neuman also) - death arrives. Nathan revives: 'git a tsapl' (gives a jerk). He asks for the nurse to wash him one final time. 'Heybam' = midwife - the nurse bathes him 'vi a heybam bodt an eyfl' (like a midwife baths an infant), recalling his emergence from 'muter-trakht' (mother-womb). 'Shlayfl' = little bow - she ties his shirt. Nathan jokes: 'amol iz geven a meylekh' (once there was a king) - beginning of a Yiddish folk formula, echoing fairy tales. 'Oyfgeroymter, tseloykhtener, gringer' = cheered-up, lit-up, lighter - Nathan is transformed. 'Erev yom-tov' = eve of holiday (Hebrew) - a sacred atmosphere wafts from him. 'Brorekh geton di kni' = blessed the knee (awkward expression suggesting genuflection or bowing). The poet takes Nathan's gifts 'in shrek' (in fear) - aware something final approaches. Nathan's brief anger: 'hant zikh fardreyt in flonter' (hand twisted in tangle) - his body failing. He speaks 'durkh di tseyn' (through teeth). The poet's comfort sounds like 'falshe treyst' (false comfort). 'Nedove' = charity (Hebrew 'nedava') - Nathan refuses to 'betln keyn nedove' (beg charity). 'Shtolts' = pride - central to Nathan's dignity in death. 'Kindishveykh' = child-softly - he apologizes. The Spinoza reference: 'nit yeder farn toyt vi er ken groys zayn, nor reyn un loyterdik ken yeder zayn' (not everyone can be great like him before death, but pure and sincere everyone can be) - Spinoza as model of philosophical death, but Nathan claims purity instead of greatness. 'Loyterdik' = sincere/pure. 'Opbindn fun zey' = untie from them - releasing worldly attachments. Final request: tell his sister he was bathed clean with 'hor fartsvogn' (hair combed), 'negl un tseyn zoyber' (nails and teeth clean).

English Translation

His body throws itself. all walls shake

like bursting dams. the day-sun kindles

from window to window red-fiery torches

and hurls them around in a whirlwind.

The whirlwind lets go. from Neuman's temples

a cold sweat begins to drip drop by drop,

and two blue encircled rings

around the eyes step sharply out.

I sit. I watch. I become myself swallowed.

I become dissolved myself in the secret of fire,

in the secret of seeing exhalation from lungs

through window through open into the sun.

I see it clearly with both my eyes,

I become myself a part of this breath,

the room becomes as if covered with a skin

and filled with burning and smoke.

His breath flames. his breath sprays with sparks.

on lips begin to boil little bubbles of foam:

his whole body, sunk in fever-fire,

begins to burn like in the middle of the forest a tree.

Not one tree burns. all trees burn,

the whole hospital is seized in flame:

and I am no longer a neighbor, a watchman,

but also, like him, a part of the fire-sea.

And all of them the neighbor-patients.

they flicker in storm and in downfall,

and sing the song recognized unto death,

with words held in -- words short.

And suddenly from peaks become flats

the Rockies melt under black smoke:

the flames -- out. the crashes become quiet,

the Rockies extinguish themselves, and Neuman -- also.

And once again it happens: he gives a jerk,

he sits himself almost up and smiles up:

-- I ask you, call the nurse. I want to manage

to wash around and dress fresh my body.

The nurse -- she comes: hello. my dear Neuman.

she undresses him, she washes his body:

she lays him on a side, she turns him over,

and cleans his nails and his teeth.

The sun pours itself over stiff ribs

and withered knees, -- the sun jumps off.

but hands of the nurse, like kissing lips

they take all limbs through from foot to head.

She washes him, like a midwife baths an infant,

just newly-come from mother-womb:

she puts on him a shirt, ties it in a little bow,

and spreads the bed out white, newly made.

She stretches him out, covers him with the sheet,

hands him to the lips a drink: --

and Neuman jokes: once there was a king,

who reigned very, very, very long.

The nurse laughs, shows him with her finger

he should not talk. goes out. and he --

a cheered-up one, a lit-up one, a lighter one, --

says: -- good neighbor, I ask you, come here.

He stretches out to me a hand pressed-open,

I see -- he holds the little watch, the pen --

-- have prepared for you, -- I ask you, take it

because today surely something will happen.

It wafted from him with eve of holiday.

but we did a blessing to ourselves the knee --

not to take -- would mean to cause him pain

and I in fear gave my hand a pull.

But here his hand twisted itself in a tangle,

and he said through his teeth:

-- I'll give it to you tomorrow, eh, what do you say?

let it lie with me here still another day. --

-- Certainly, certainly, -- I said lostly --

let it lie more than a day with you --- what does it mean? --

but my words awakened only anger.

because from them wafted with false comfort.

His eyes began to burn.

and from them struck with rage:

-- I am still proud enough in myself to be able

not to beg any charity -- still a day.

What do you mean -- more? what do you mean -- lie?

do you reckon that dying is hard for me? -- --

and all my words to calm him, to soothe him,

they stirred up his pride even more.

Quite quickly he came back to himself,

and child-softly said: -- I ask, forgive --

let it remain in memory with you, that Neuman

did before death preserve his pride after all.

Spinoza, I hope, will not be angry at me

for letting anger now into my heart:

not everyone before death, like him, can be great.

but pure and sincere everyone can be.

And now do take from me the things.

to untie oneself from them means now a lot:

I will not close my eyes,

until I become free from the smallest thing.

And you -- to my sister -- should you say.

that the nurse today bathed me clean,

that my hair was combed,

and clean my nails and my teeth.
