Work 410 of 440

Pages 479-480. Conclusion of 'Di natur': from God's feet a pole, from head a tower, from each hand 'a shtarbndikn yung' (a dying young man). New poem 'Shteyner un shtern' (Stones and Stars): accused 'shuldik' (guilty), destroys life, takes off heads 'mit bloyz a vort' (with just a word). Like 'letste farbrekher' (worst criminals). People killed in corners because he 'geteyt di ru' (slew the peace). Brings 'fuln vogn' (full wagon) of sorrow, shares like bread. Called 'merder un gazlen' (murderer and robber — Hebrew 'gazlan'). Wherever he comes — trace of blood. When locked away, life is calm. Asks 'rakhmones' (mercy — Hebrew 'rachamim'), seeks 'zkhus' (merit — Hebrew 'zekhut'). Becomes own watchman, beats self. Can't remember killing but steps 'getsundn royt' (lit red). Against 'gzar un forurteyl' (decree and prejudgment — Hebrew 'gezera'), heaven and earth 'haglen' (hail) with stones and stars. Answers: 's'iz vert' (it's worth it). Poet's guilt and vindication. New poem 'Ershter may in a tsarisher tfire in Sibir' (First of May in a Tsarist Prison in Siberia): based on Leivick's own experience — arrested 1906 for Bund activities, imprisoned, escaped, re-arrested 1908, sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. 'Toyte hoyz' (dead house — Dostoevsky's 'Notes from the House of the Dead'). 'Kemfer-sotsyalistn' (fighter-socialists) in 'nit-baheytsde kamern' (unheated chambers). Tsar threw them here, chains on feet. Soldiers in 'kishef-rayf' (magic circle — Hebrew 'kishuf'). 'Pnimer' (faces — Hebrew 'panim') covered with 'glyver' (fever). Walls of 'kaltn keyver' (cold grave — Hebrew 'kever'). 'Shomer' (guard — Hebrew) has cold skin. Winter night 'yamert' (laments). Sleep on 'hayle breter' (hollow boards). Flame flickers. Sharp voice like 'meser-klingl' (knife-blade) tears silence. Guards investigate, all lie still. Shout becomes laughter, fighters turn in sleep. May Day defiance in prison.

English Translation

From his feet — a pole,

and from his head — a tower,

and from each hand of his —

a dying young man.

Stones and Stars

They say of me: guilty; I destroy life,

I take off heads with just a word;

they say: how can he demand forgiveness?

his manner must be with the worst criminals.

They say — in corners sit people killed,

because I have slain in them the peace;

because sorrow I bring a full wagon

and share it to everyone, as one shares bread.

They say — I am murderer and hard robber: —

wherever I come — remains a trace of blood;

but then, when I am locked away under lock,

life goes calmly, all is well for everyone.

From heaven and earth I would ask mercy,

I would want to find on myself a merit.

but I become over myself a watchman

and beat myself with my own foot.

And strange, strange — I want to remember

how and when I killed lives? —

and I can't recognize any trace of murder,

though all my steps are lit red.

Against decree and prejudgment it's hard to resist, —

and here begins the heaven, and here the earth

to hail upon me with stones and stars

and I answer calmly just one word: — it's worth it.

First of May in a Tsarist Prison in Siberia

The dead house in the north-land in the desert —

locked on lock and solitude,

in prison sit fighter-socialists

packed in unheated chambers.

The tsar has thrown them here,

on both feet put on them a chain,

they should here in loneliness of the north —

fallen sink into death.

At all gates, at all doors,

on all towers of the fenced yard,

soldiers fully-armed march

and turn as in a magic circle.

The faces covered with fever,

the shoulders steel-like, like the lock of a cell;

thick are the walls of a cold grave,

and thicker still — the guard's cold skin.

The winter night — it laments in duration;

in stormwind and whirling snow

on hollow boards set into the wall

the fighters sleep laid out in a row.

In a little lamp flickers a little flame-tongue,

and shadows turn from body to body;

a voice sharp, like a knife-blade,

the dead stillness suddenly tears open.

No one knows who shouted the shout,

the guards run around from door to door,

and their wonder grows, for all lie

silent, as before, without slightest stir.

And as they sit down — the guards;

thus disperses again the shout —

shout transforms into laughter

and fighters give a turn in sleep.
