From a world of freedom

Work 376 of 440

Page 441. Continuation of 'Aza glik' (Such Happiness): from 'velt fun a frayer' (world of freedom), fire ignites of 'yung-trubadur' (young troubadour). Among youths with 'serenades un vayn' (serenades and wine). Song resonates in hearts. Tells her to leave 'troyer' (mourning), 'noneshkn kleyd' (nun's dress). Through 'moyer' (cell walls) strikes 'gitarishe freyd' (guitar joy). Dances like boy, asks why she kneels 'in farshlogenems vinkl' (in beaten corner). Tells her to lie on 'darshtikn bet' (withered bed). Speak 'vi amol' (like once). Wants her though she's absent. Part III 'Heloiz, her' (Heloise, Hear): 'zey visn, zey visn' (they know) — discovery of their love. 'Geshray fun mayn guf... ibergerisn' (cry of body torn apart) — castration reference.

English Translation

From a world of freedom

gives a gleam such a trace —

ignites in me the fire

of the young troubadour.

I am a youth among youths,

serenades and wine,

my song becomes resonant

plays into hearts within.

Take yourself out of mourning,

from your nun's dress,

through the walls of my cell

strikes guitar-like joy.

See, I dance like a boy —

why don't you dance along? —

in the beaten corner

why do you stand kneeling?

With frozen limbs,

with silenced prayer;

better lie down

on my withered bed.

Speak out with your lips

with warmed voice:

my faithful one, my beloved —

like once, like once.

Such happiness to want you

and to have you here:

step across the threshold

though I see — you're not here.

III

Heloise, Hear

Heloise, hear —

they know, they know;

the cry of my body

has torn itself apart.
