palmes-oyf a vaysn krolik;
blut iz shtromik, blut iz frish —
vasht di hent op mit karbolik.
Oysgehodevest ahinter shlos
kroliklekh mit royte oygn:
gey un veys un tref oyf vos
kroliklekh azoyne toygn!
Tref farvos a man derlangt
ale, ale inderfri zey
shisele mit frish getrank,
shisele mit kukuruze.
Tref farvos a krolik-kind
zukht mit zunik-royte oygn,
zukht — biz vanen es gefint
mames noplen oyf tsu zaygn.
Zaygt der mames milkh arayn
biz es vert aleyn an eser. —
vakst azoy tog-oys, tog-ayn.

Vert azoy a gantser layt,

Elegy on the Death of a White Rabbit with Red Eyes
A doctor stands by the dissection table,
dissects a white rabbit;
blood flows streaming, blood is fresh —
washes his hands with carbolic.
Raised behind lock
little rabbits with red eyes:
go and know and find out what
such little rabbits are good for!
Find out why a man delivers
to all, all early in the morning
a bowl with fresh drink,
a bowl with corn.
Find out why a rabbit-child
searches with sunny-red eyes,
searches — until it finds
mother's nipples to suck.
Sucks in mother's milk
until it becomes itself an eater. —
grows thus day out, day in.
becomes ever more beautiful, ever larger.
Becomes thus a grown-up,
licks out the bowl until dry,
grabs a little straw and chews,
dances and jumps on mother's back.
Go and know, that this man
who stills thirst and hunger
carries a needle in his hand,
a poisoned one with bacilli.
Go and know, that this hand
will inject — poison
and will ignite with fire
the white rabbit stupefy.
