Page 510. David Edelstadt's ghost draws his famous poem on the wall: 'O, gute fraynt, ven ikh vel shtarbn, / trogt tsu tsum keyver di royte fon' (Oh good friends, when I die, / carry the red banner to my grave) - from his iconic revolutionary poem. 'Bashpritst mit blut fun arbetsmon' = sprinkled with blood of the workingman. Nathan appropriates Edelstadt's words. 'Sharbn' = shards. 'Faykldike shroyt' = spark-like shrieking - teeth chattering. 'Gorgl' = gurgling (death rattle). 'Goyses' = dying person (Hebrew 'goses'). The poet-narrator reveals: 'der shokhn dos bin ikh' (the neighbor is I) - Leivick himself was the neighbor in the sanatorium. 'Farkhapt' = captured/seized. 'Kokhes oysderveylte' = chosen powers streaming to Nathan's body.

But therefore with warmer intimacy
greets him David Edelstadt's apparition --
and here again on the walls of the room
the hand. the hand. -- it draws a poem:
-- Oh, good friends, when I will die,
carry to the grave the red banner
the red banner with the bright colors
sprinkled with blood of the workingman --
-- to sing before death is surely good,
but such a thing for me, you see, is not destined:
but yes destined, that earth of Colorado
through you, poet, should become one's own earth.
Oh, good friends, when I will die,
carry also to my grave the red banner --
and Neuman suddenly feels the touch of shards
and spark-like shrieking from tooth against tooth.
In Neuman's throat something gurgles
and falls back down with a swallow, -- -- --
thus on a bright early morning
began Neuman's last wandering.
The neighbor -- that is I. The dying Neuman
captured me, completely chained me
to his room. As soon as day would come,
I would already watch for the nurse's step.
To receive a greeting, barely waiting
for her passing word: he is still here --
her voice, the always attentive, tender one,
would fill with strength in the early hour.
It was clear: the days are numbered,
and perhaps already the last hour is rising:
but wonderful, chosen powers,
from somewhere would stream to Neuman's body.
