Page 35. 'In hoyf iz a shturem' concludes: many-headed figures mock the prisoner. 'Ayngeshmidteh zaynen mir' (We Are Shackled) expresses the universal prisoner's fantasy: someone will open all doors, break the chains, lead us by the hand over seas 'to mother' — childlike yearning for rescue. 'Ikh hob zikh oyfgekhapt' (I Woke Up) shows the prisoner sitting on his chains, eating black bread he's grown disgusted by, choking himself with weariness.
Un nem ikh mayn ponim avek fun dem fentster —

Ayngeshmidteh zaynen mir,

Ikh hob zikh oyfgekhapt in mitn nokht

Oyf beyde kni farleygt hob ikh dem kop,

And when I take my face away from the window —
the face in the mirror also vanishes.
When I clasp my hands and lay them on my heart —
the wings also become broken.
In the yard is a storm, they knock on the windows
as if with iron fingers,
many-headed figures stare their eyes
and stick their tongues out at me.
We Are Shackled
We are shackled,
each sits in a cell apart:
fallen against the door
we stand and wait for a miracle.
Suddenly someone quietly
will open all the doors,
will tear apart our chains,
lead us out of prison.
Will lead us by the hand
over forests, over great seas,
to a distant, distant land —
and bring us home, to mother.
I Woke Up
I woke up in the middle of the night
and sat on the chains on my feet:
stretched out a hand, reached the bread,
broke from the whole piece and ate.
I'd been disgusted long by black bread,
no more — by sitting awake until morning.
On both knees I laid my head,
bent over, chewed and choked myself.
