An Invented One

Work 70 of 440

Page 80. 'An Invented One': a striking poem of derealization — the speaker realizes his hands, face, everything is not real but a stranger's, a false play. An 'invented one' wanders without path or goal. The true self is somewhere far, wound into itself like a chain, dragging step by step. No one knows where or how long. 'Portraits and Chairs and Mirrors': dissolution into smoke — objects and self disappear. The mirror shows a twisted, contorted appearance. 'Fated to look at myself with disgust and horror' — eyes flood with tears while the mouth smiles. A devastating self-portrait of dissociation.

מיט עקל און גרויל;

English Translation

An Invented One

And suddenly I see: it's not there at all —

just an error,

not your hands, not your face —

a stranger's entirely.

And what you see and what you do —

a false play:

an invented one you wander about

without path, without goal.

The true one is somewhere far,

is wound up,

is screwed into himself

as in a chain.

He drags himself somewhere after the chain,

goes step by step.

And where? Until when? Not he, not anyone —

no one knows.

Portraits and Chairs and Mirrors

Portraits and chairs and mirrors

disappear in smoke,

portraits and chairs and mirrors,

and I myself — too.

A little more I see my appearance

swimming in the mirror:

a little more I see my appearance

twisted and contorted.

Fated to look at myself

with disgust and horror;

the eyes flooded with tears.

With a smile — the mouth.
